It has been an exciting transfer window for us, Arsenal fans. We have been very active, trying to fix the positions where we were lacking expertise, strengthening the bench and bringing in competition for other places. Let us look at the confirmed transfers till now.
Transfer Ins
Kai Havertz – £65.00m from Chelsea. We all have been asking for an upgrade on Xhaka from God knows when. Initially I thought Kai has been brought in to fill that position but I could be wrong. We saw Kai in more advance position playing centrally up top in our game against Manchester City and with Jesus injury records, he might be more of a competition to Jesus/Nketiah than a replacement of Xhaka. Frankly, if he is to play a striker role, we should have got an outright CF and 65m is a lot of money to get one. If he is a Xhaka’s replacement, who happens to cover the CF if the need be, I am more than happy. We may have paid a bit more for him, since his days at Chelsea wasn’t really exciting but he is young and was part of a Champions League winning team. Mixed opinions among Arsenal fans, we will have to revaluate once the season is over.
Jurien Timber – £38.00m from Ajax. Jurien has been brilliant whenever he is on the pitch so far. He is a natural right back, came to deputise Ben White but we have seen Arteta using him at LB position and he hasn’t disappointed. We have to accept two things at LB – Zinchenko is not going to be available for 38 games a season and Tierney is a limited defender who doesn’t suit Arteta’s football. We have seen Tomi at LB, Kiwior played too but Timber has made that position his own. Right side of our game is pretty aesthetic with Ben White overlapping Saka and drifting in the final third when we are in attack. Timber can do the same at the left side and it would be a treat to watch once he has the chemistry built up with Martinelli. He is fast, and don’t shy away in a 1v1. He is convincing in his defending and has good challenges/tackles in him. We paid good money for a good defender, no complaints here.
Declan Rice – £105.00m from West Ham. This one’s a pickle, not because I have any doubt in Rice’s ability but because the amount we paid for him to hammers. However, if you looks his age profile and consider the fact that Partey is 30+ and has only couple years left on his contract, he seems to be a good buy. He do not have an injury record, can play in a single / double pivot and I’m sure he has his best days ahead in red and white. We paid more, but that’s English premium I guess. Likes of Lavia and Mac Allister are going in the range of 40-50m to Liverpool, but Klopp doesn’t really need a high profile, high valued player to implement his game.
David Raya – £30m from Brentford. This one’s almost done. Fab confirmed the deal has been agreed and he will go through the medicals soon to be an Arsenal player. We have Ramsdale, who is not a bad keeper at all and pretty much does what Arteta expects him to. However, he has been erratic at times and Matt Turner wasn’t the answer. We are also going to play a lot of games this season (4-competitions, Champions League one of them) and we not only need a back up to Ramsdale but a competition who can play equally well every Wednesday/ Thursday and cover for him in injury times. Again, we are paying over the top for a keeper who plays for Brentford and has only a year left in his contract. Compare him to Bernd Leno, who was playing for Arsenal, was player of the season and one of the best shot stoppers in the league and he only fetched us less than one-third to what we are paying for David.
These 4 confirmed transfers brings our spend to 238m GBP… till now.
Transfer outs
Granit Xhaka – £21.5m to Bayer Leverkusen. I wasn’t expecting that but Granit fetched us good money after his best season with us. We have already replaced him with Kai, and have Vieira and ESR who can play in his position. We have also seen Arteta experimenting with a double pivot of Rice and Partey, which eliminates a need of #8 who need to track back, which is what the case is, with ESR and Vieira.
Pablo Mari – £3.7m to Monza. Good luck to him, we didn’t need him last season and we have enough body in the defence.
Auston Trusty – £4.9m to Sheffield United. At some point, we will have to learn how to best judge a player whether he can make it at the grand stage at Arsenal, or sell him and make some profit. Sure, we will have cases like Kevin DeBruyne and Mo Salah, but for every Salah, Chelsea sold 10 academy players for good money. I’m happy we decided Trusty wasn’t the answer to our questions and though the fee is very small, at least we made some money unlike Maitland-Niles. Do you remember we let go of 20m not long ago from Wolves for AMN, only to send him on loan and releasing him for free this window? Yes, lets avoid that and with the amount of investments our owners are doing, we need to recoup some of the money through player’s sell.
Till now, we have made about £30m in players sell.
…which leaves us to a £208 deficit. All our buys are costly, makes sense if you consider the fact that we finished 2nd last season and are going to compete for the title. It also makes sense when we are playing in Europe against the best of the world. CL will bring us extra cash, we have recovered from Covid and shirt sells are on a high. Some of that will cover this spend, the other, will be paid by some sacrifices in near future.
For now, we are winning the transfer window. In terms of the bodies we have brought in and sold; not so much in terms of the money we have spent.
At first, I thought to make this a ‘frequently updated’ article, but it will mess up the date of publishing and I’m sure you don’t want to re-read part of the article to check what’s new. We can review it again once the transfer window is over and we have played few games.
What do you think of each of these transfers? Happy for some, not for others? Let us know in the comments!
here’s the thing, this new group should perform better against the bus sitting factions, so long as we can find a way to be more direct in our attack, but I’m not sure we’ve sufficiently helped our best players, especially if we can’t get substantially more goals from our “Striker” position…with Tierney in the doghouse, as per usual, and White still learning how to best provide Saka with the requisite amount of cover, it looks like our wide-siders are going to see a constant diet of double-teams, unless we commit more players centrally in and around the box
don’t get me wrong I think we’re a better team on paper than last season, as we’ve added 3 potential starters and Partey appears to be staying, but I’m just not convinced that the man in charge has the tactical acumen to get it done…above and beyond my aforementioned concerns, I’m likewise worried about the potential for a whole host of ill-advised tinkering and the fact that, considering our unprecedented budget, we didn’t add anyone with a history of clinical finishing…in fact, it might just be the worst monies spent to expected goals ratio in the history of the sport…not the end of the world, but a rather troubling stat
I’m not exactly sure how much we will truly learn until Jesus and Zinchenko are back at full strength and MA’s forced into revealing his best 11…until then we might see the same starting 11 from last Sunday…I like Timber, but only defensively on the left, and Havertz simply can’t be relied upon up top…with this in mind, just imagine, if after all that spending, MA’s best 11 to open the season includes a LB, in Timber, who’s only played that position 9 times in his 220+ professional starts, a RB, who only played that position twice in the PL before Saliba forced MA’s hand, a 100+M defensively-minded, former CB, who might want to trade his DM for an AM, and a positional tweener, who struggles for goals, leading the line…from a purely odds perspective this would seem, at first blush, to be a longshot course of action at best…of course, over the short-term, if Jesus and ZInchenko both return before month’s end, these decisions likely won’t come back to haunt, especially considering our schedule, but I’d be lying if I said I’m not a bit worried about our prospects moving forward…who knows, maybe every other manager these players have ever played for were totally off-base when it came to their respective positional evaluations…I guess only time will tell
For the most part it looks like we’ve done some solid business this summer. My concerns are how will Arteta utilise the players he’s bought eg Timber’s a RB why isn’t he being used there when we have Tierney as backup at LB? If Tierney’s not good enough sell him we should be able to get £25 odd million for him minimum. I have real worries about Havertz – all managers have singings who made perfect sense at the time who don’t work out (Veron at ManU), many managers roll the dice on a signing eg Overmars no one really knew whether he would recover from the ACL which for a pace merchant can be the death knell of their careers, some players aren’t the right fit but blossom elsewhere (Bergkamp) and so on but I just can’t see him being the right fit for the PL.
Is spending over £30 million on a backup keeper really a good idea? Will it actually unsettle Ramsdale and cause more damage than good? If he’s been bought because Ramsdale isn’t good enough for No 1 does he move the dial enough?
Beyond that the biggest threat to us this season are the fan boys who are already trying to downplay expectations – FUCK THAT. Best part of £700 million spent by Arteta who also inherited starters worth several hundred million pounds means he has a billion pound squad – that’s £1,000,000,000 nine zeros boys and girls.
Anything less than a serious title challenge (that’s not someone else winning it with 3 games in hand) and CL semi final (qtrs if the draws shitty) at minimum. Finish below 2nd should be the sack.
it’s like the calm before the storm on LIR
TRVL,
That’s it,the money is spent and the target is clear,to most of us. Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see how it all plays out. The first few games should be winnable but that’s what makes them so stressful, imperative we get 9 points I think. Dropping points against the bigger teams is to be expected but the minnows will have to be put to the sword if a title challenge is to be a realistic possibility.
Almunia
We actually had a good record against the traditional top teams & top 4 last season City aside (23 points against Spuddies, Liverpool, Chelsea, ManU and Newcastle).
Replicating that this season will be very difficult so for Arteta its not just improving the results against the lower teams but trying to maintain what he did against the top teams.
All with the expectations of coming off an “amazing season” and spending big.
Marc,
That’s the crux of it really, can he replicate or improve on last season? He has spent so much that excuses are not an option but has he spent well? Will a stronger top 6 challenge the assumption that Arsenal leapfrogged into 2nd place in English football? You’d have to imagine Liverpool,Chelsea and utd can only improve. Newcastle have been very quiet but have still added a couple of players that will improve them. Are we really city’s main rivals now? Can we overtake them? The pressure really is on.
Almunia
That’s why the fanboys are bricking it – they’ll be rolling out Wenger’s excuse about to many additional players upsetting the balance of the team before you know it!
Marc-obviously I agree with your earlier points, as it’s all a little too square peg/round hole latter days Wenger for me, when the likes of Ozil and Ramsey were shoehorned out wide…sometimes when a manager focuses too heavily on their most flattering of headlines selfish and short-sighted decisions tend to follow, as we saw immediately following our fortuitous FA victory…now a few years later, when things appear substantially better, we’re starting to see some eerily similar decisions being made…of course, positional flexibility is a far more desirable trait nowadays, with CBs and backers taking more advanced positions at times, amongst other nontraditional maneuverings, but one must be careful not to do so just to say you did…hopefully his largely self-serving pursuits won’t derail our two front quests…for me, he’s still far more “show” than substance, which was on full display this past week when he spoke about how he supposedly contemplated quitting following our end of season cock-up…now why would a manager who claims he had a 5 year plan and who was, in his words, ahead of schedule, and likewise had the full support of ownership, walk away…just more contrived lip service nonsense to encourage those within the choir to shower him with even more undeserved praise
Fabio Vieira is inviting interest from Wolves, Trossard from Man City.
Looks like there will be some more changes to above list. If any changes happens, we must fetch good returns on these players.
Vieira I’d cash in on if the money was decent (didn’t he cost £35 million?) Trossard I wouldn’t sell on principle – you don’t strengthen your rivals.
TRVL
Agree 100% what worries me is so many buy into it.
Marc,
Yes but he seems to be preferring his move to City, probably because Martinelli won’t let him play at LW and with Kai Havertz in the team, he won’t get game time as a false 9/center forward.
I wouldn’t sell him personally, he has got that magic in him whenever he is on the pitch. Hard worker, have output in him and can keep Martinelli and even Jesus on red alert.
Ambarish
The question is ask is why are City interested in Trossard but weren’t in for Havertz.
Remember the players City have that Trossard would have to get past to get a game as well,
Trossard’s another tweener, as he’s not tall enough to be a proper target man and lacks the pace to be a legit Marts cover piece…I would sell him if the price was right and we were bringing in another pacey winger…he just doesn’t fit MA’s preferred tactics and was a stop-gap purchase, like Jorginho, when we couldn’t secure our top options…think about it, he wanted a forward with world-class speed(Mudryk) and a DM with some defensive capabilities in his toolbox(Caicedo) and instead we got Tross and Jorginho…this isn’t meant to be disparaging to either party, just the facts
Marc
Probably the same as ours, a stop gap in 30 odd millions. But he has been terrific for us so far, and I think we can use his couple of years to cover for Martinelli.
Vieira should go.
TRVL
I doubt we can bring in someone the likes Mudryk anymore. We have just told Brentford that we pay them 3m and rest of 27m later to comply with FFP. Trossard will go in 30m, a pacey young pacer will cost us a lot.
Pep’s a good judge of player – why does he want him?
Ambarish-I wasn’t suggesting that we should or would spend 90+ for a forward in this window, I just meant that considering who was at the top of their winter wishlist, what they settled for had none of those most desired traits…this is why we’ve been linked to the likes of Bittino, Simons and Olise, all of whom have incredible pace, and why we likewise paid above the number for Rice
Marc-regardless of Pep’s true feelings on the matter, I’m certainly not suggesting that Tross is a hack, I’m just saying that in MA’s preferred tactical formation Tross is a periphery piece…he can’t provide width, which, with our projected backers tucking inside, means he’s problematic as a Marts replacement, and it’s clear that MA doesn’t trust him in the 8 hole or we would have seen him in that position last season, when only Xhaka was being deployed there on a regular basis…with City, who play a more direct brand of football than us, he could be deployed in a multitude of positions, including along side or tucked in behind Haaland…that said, I would very much doubt he would be Pep’s first choice, but in light of his fairly reasonable price, PL experience and age profile, he might fit the bill as another stop-gap option
Ambarish-as a bit of a follow-up to our earlier discussions involving the Saudi league, Dazn just sent me a rather lengthy email detailing a couple new deals they brokered with both the Bundesliga and the aforementioned Saudi gig…now these are only for viewership members in a couple mid-sized markets like Canada, but it does represents a pretty important step, one that the Chinese League failed to secure until it was too late…it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers they generate in their first year, especially in comparison to some of the secondary players, like the Eredivisie, Belgian Pro League and even Ligue 1, considering the current dismantling of PSG…as for the PL, Serie A, La Liga and the Bundesliga, I would suspect that it will have very little impact, at least for the time being, but if the Saudi’s have another banner recruitment period next summer, the footballing landscape could change quite drastically
If it’s true and Pool have won the race for Caicedo, Klopp appears to have accomplished the kind of midfield reboot we so desperately needed…they might need a year to figure their shit out, but thay now have a nice balance of experienced and youthful players, a bucket load of talent and a considerable amount of depth up front and in their revamped midfield…we had better find a way to win this season or it could be tough sledding once Klopp, ten Hag and Poch rally their respective troops…based on the wealth of younger talent landing in the PL we could be entering a golden era when it comes to the battle for European positions…thank goodness the PL might be gifted an automatic 5th CL invite next season
TRVL
The Saudi League will not impact the PL for one very simple reason – the crowds will be rubbish (quality wise quantity wise no idea).
TRVL
Liverpool have bought some real quality and I expect them to be pretty much guaranteed a top 4 finish – they’ve had their season wobble.
ManU and Newcastle are the ones who have surprised me I really thought they’d both do more – of course still plenty of time. Amazed both aren’t in for Kane.
I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of Arsenal fans who are in for a shock when they realise that we didn’t suddenly become 2nd best team in the country last season and City’s main challengers. We’re going to be competing with the others for at best 2nd and all the way down to 5th or 6th.
It’s going to be a fiercely contested season – should make good viewing.
“Pep’s a good judge of player – why does he want him?”
To weaken us and strengthen City I presume Marc.
Tony
That was my point.
Apparently Caicedo is only interested in a move to Chelsea and doesn’t want to move to Liverpool.
Can’t help thinking that if we’d called Tony Bloom’s bluff and paid £100m for Caicedo last January, we probably would still have got Rice this summer.
Mitoma is also a big miss; I would have loved him to play 9 or false 9 with Tossard as they played well together with Brighton.
It’s what I would have done last Jan to support the run in. My Mitoma views are well known that makes Kai H a real head scratcher. Mitoma is twice the player Havertz is as a goal scorer and can play across the front line and 8. Also a good way to rest Marts.
With Caicedo bought, then buying Mitoma, Timber and Rice this summer and I’d be far more confident about out title assault this season.
Now the Bin Dippers have did £111m for Caicedo. I rest my case.
The pressure this season is going to be immense especially on the fan boys and their gnarly leader Pedro. However, whilst I’d love them to suffer, winning the league is far more important this season.
First up Forest at home. 3:0 win for us unless Matt Turner does a Polish Tomaszewski on us.
I saw he U-turned, Marc. He’s a bit skippy like that, but under a strong manager like Mikel what could possibly go wrong. 🙂
Vieira
Calm before the storm on LiR made me giggle. The clans are gathering and I can feel the quickening!
Without sounding too weird I hope, I’m very fond of you all and I’m looking forward to going through another season of ups and downs in such good company.
Ambarish – can I urge you in your articles to encourage readers to contribute below the line? I really enjoy talking to hitherto undiscovered Gooners!
First game of the season proper for Haverfordwest tonight. Home game against Pontypridd United. I’m collecting my very expensive season ticket at the ‘stadium’ tonight. 75 quid! A bargain – and only 3 quid for a pint.
Just need a calm, injury and drama free win tomorrow. Passing, movement and finishing chances. And revenge for that Arteterian shitshow defeat to them at the end of last season.
Caicedo’s head being turned by Chelsea and Liverpool reminded me of this.
https://youtu.be/bSxuXQCEC7M
There’s even a case for arguing that the Max von Sydow character looks a bit like an emotional Klopp with the darker haired Priest in the guise of an expectant Poachettino (see what I did there?).
It’d be good news for us I think if he went nowhere and spent the rest of the season vomiting frogs over Tony Bloom while tied to his IKEA bed.
Haaland being Haaland, scored within 4 minutes.
Is it too late to put a tenner on Haaland winning the Golden Boot?
He just got his second with a great strike.
May be yes, too late now.
Ambarish
Pretty sure the odds won’t be great!
I will say that a long-term DeBruyne injury could be a real game changer when it comes to the title race…now City has plenty of time to make a move or two prior to the window closing, but no one they get now will adequately replace what KD brings to the proverbial table
of course, adding Paqueta will help to allay some of their concerns/fears
Pep is mental, still angry on Haaland.
TRVL
There will always be a drop in performances no matter who they bring in place of De Bruyne. His injury will make them weaker surely.
Ambarish
What Pep did there was unprofessional and stupid – I get the vibe it was either for the camera’s or pre planned.
Ambarish-as I clearly noted…if he’s reinjured his hammy, he could be on the shelf for a considerable period and even when he returns he will be treated with kid gloves…I would suspect that Pep will push for Paq and another player of great import
as for the whole Kane gig, it’s such an intriguing maneuver, as it could put them in the drier’s seat again for the next 3 years…most of their closest competitors lost key players this off-season, so it should be easy pickings for them…tbf the Bundesliga needed this sort of move even more than Bayern, as they’re looking more and more like feeder league with each passing year…if Tuchel can figure out how to get the most out of a Kane/Musiala duo, they could be in the conversation for top 3 CL contenders
