Well, we have all seen Wenger’s transfer strategy. Hyping up couple of signings for the whole of transfer window only to then miss out and say atleast we tried. Looks like only the manager changed but the strategy remained same.
Yes, I get all of it. January transfer window is complicated and it’s difficult to get players. We have spent a big chunk of money in the summer for signing six players and might have just ran out of cash. And it’s difficult to integrate a new signing to get an instant impact in performance.
But then Arteta in his press conference accepted there are places to fill and that him and Edu and club is working to fill the gap and improve in positions we need to. We had been linked to Vlahovic, only for him to join Juventus; there was cash to spend.
We have been linked to Bruno Guimaraes from last couple of seasons, but he is joining New Castle if reports are to believed. My assumption is that we didn’t offer him a contract, otherwise there is no reason he won’t prioritise London.
It’s a complicated scenario for Arteta and Edu. On one hand, they accept we need a CF and dominant CM but then it’s 26th January and we haven’t signed anyone. I hope we get someone before window closes, but why to wait for the last day. Do I say we only had these 2 players in mind and no alternatives? Are we expecting to continue playing with Xhaka and Lacazette and expect a miracle?
Laca is leaving this summer. A CF signed in this window will get enough game time to bed in. With Xhaka, we are out of Champions League from forever, we seriously need an upgrade over him and ample coverage in case of any injuries (and red cards) to not play Charlie Patino in a semi final!
I’m frustrated. I don’t see us improving on these two positions but hope I’m wrong.
