We begin our Champions League conquest today in Italy. It’s a new season, new format and new hope to win something, or at least make it to the end. All of Arsenal are ready to make an impact and players, who have dreamt of playing in Champions League, are going to start today in an attempt to prove they are one of the best football players on the planet.
We, as a club, has come a long way. Last 10-15 years haven’t been good, but we are fighting on two fronts and I’m excited than ever. Martin Odegaard’s unavailability makes me a bit nervous but someone from that playing XI will take up the opportunity to let us not miss our captain.
Let’s go through the new format, whom we are going to play in Champions League this year in League Phase and what’s my expectation against Atlanta today.
Champions League new format explained
We have a change to the Champions League format from this year. There are 36 teams participating, and each club will play against 8 others club (4 away, 4 home games). Top 8 teams out of the 36 will qualify automatically for the round of 16 knockout stage, while the teams finishing between 9th and 24th place will have to compete in a play off in a home and away game.
Rest 12 teams will be eliminated.
So, we have 4 extra teams this year. There is no home and away in the first round called League Phase, you get to play 8 different teams with half of those games at home and other half away. Every other team does the same and the top 8 of this League Phase table qualifies for the round of 16. The other 8 teams are selected between the next 16 spots, where they play a home and away game against another team and the best 8 of these qualifies as well.
Right, so we have been left with 16 teams now after League Phase. From round of 16, the format remains same as last year, a home and away game till finals with whoever losing gets eliminated. Final remains a single game at a neutral venue.
So, which 8 teams are playing?
Arsenal Champions League fixtures
We get to play Atlanta, Inter, Sporting, Girona away from home and games against PSG, Shakhtar, Monaco and Dinamo at home.
Atlanta v Arsenal – Sep 19th
Arsenal v PSG – Oct 01
Arsenal v Shakhtar Donetsk – Oct 22
Inter Milan v Arsenal – Nov 06
Sporting v Arsenal – Nov 26
Arsenal v Monaco – Dec 11
Arsenal v Dinamo Zagreb – Jan 22
Girona v Arsenal – Jan 29
If you ask me, we have a rather easier Champions League draw but you can’t take a CL game lightly. Only last night, City dropped points against Inter at home in a goalless draw.
With the new format, there’s a challenge to finish in the top 8 to avoid 2 extra knockoff games and to qualify directly to the round of 16. To do that, you indirectly compete with the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Bayern, PSG, Juventus, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Leverkusen, AC Milan and Dortmund. That’s 12 top teams in Europe and there are few others which can beat any team on their best days. We are playing one of these today – Atlanta.
Atlanta v Arsenal
We are opening our Champions League campaign today against Atlanta. They are the current Europa League winners who beat the likes of Liverpool and Leverkusen last year to win the trophy. They will make sure we don’t have an easy game.
In team news, we have a good news regarding Bukayo. He has travelled with the team to Italy and Calafiori is back with the team as well. Declan Rice will be present after his suspesion in Premier League. We needed him at this stage. Zinchenko is out injured but Timber has done a good job and we most likely won’t miss him. Mikel Merino is out for some time. The only concern for us is the Odegaard’s injury. There’s no proper back up and unless someone (Ethan) steps up, we are going to struggle both in EPL and CL. Hopefully, it’s only a slight drop in performance which we can manage.
I expect us to play the same backline of White, Gabriel, Saliba, Timber with Raya in goal. Jorginho will make way for Declan Rice and Partey and Trossard will fill the other 2 places. Saka, Havertz, and Martinelli will pick themselves up. Trossard did a good job, but he is a winger, not a mid. I so wish, ESR was still with us today. Anyways, go grab that opportunity Nwaneri.
Expectations?
Lets have some high expectation from a club fighting for the domestic league and the CL, having spent more than half a billion dollar, shall we? Champions League games can be unexpected but we should be winning today and with couple of goals. With about 15 top teams fighting for that 8 position to avoid getting into an extra play-off game, every goal will matter. Goal difference can be the decider between a 8th place finish or the 9th.
Lets go out there, score couple of goals and get back home to face Man City. Martinelli to score today, that’s my bet.
Right, that’s all for today. See you during the game.
We have a fancy goals and assists counter at the bottom (phone) and sidebar (desktop).
Ambarish
Thanks for the explanation and hope springs eternal.
To be fair Altanta are 9th with mixed results losing to the bigger teams regularly buy a couple of goal margins.
We should be too strong for Atlanta even with Jorginho pulling the strings in midfield and will be interesting to see how good Rice is at supplying our forwards.
I think 1:2 to us, but I want us to be playing to our strengths and quiet 1 and 2 touch football through the Italians.
Some starting line ups with tactical line ups we can put out from the Mirror.

The goals is a nice improvement to the site, Ambarish, thank you.
Tony—as a longtime admirer of the Atalanta manager I generally get a good sense about what tactical tweaks Gasperini might employ against a particular opponent…his base model is a 3-4-2-1, but much like with the Italian national side it will morph into a something vastly different at each end of the pitch depending upon whom he perceives to be the opposition’s greatest threats
against Pool last season, in their rather convincing 3-0 victory at Anfield, when Klopp prioritized the PL and started Elliot and Gakpo out wide and Jones and Endo in the midfield, he clogged the middle, then sat a bit deeper in the flanks, so as to encourage them attack out wide…of course Pool obliged, as that was their tactical preference anyways, then as soon as they committed one too many players, they choked them out with well-timed “zonal” presses…as soon as Pool conceded possession they would attack with pace and numbers, in the most direct manner possible…if they failed to achieve the desired results they would quickly retreat and repeat the process…interestingly enough they looked much the deserving side even though they had less than 30% possession
whereas against Lever in the Europa Final, it looked far more like a 3-4-3, that relied far less on the above pressing scheme and much more on a man-to-man marking approach…Gasperini believed that the keys to stopping this still undefeated Lever side was to man-up their best distributors of the ball and wide side threats…by doing so he stymied Granit’s ability to be an effective pivot man, as he had no time or space on the ball, and even when he broke containment, his preferred target, Wirtz, was likewise being shadowed…these adjustments forced Lever into opting for either a slow, plodding course of action, or an overtly reckless, ball-conceding shit show…when the first plan failed miserably, they flipped the script, which left them exposed on the counter…of course, the fact that Lookman put on an absolute clinic certainly didn’t help matters
if we field a similar team to last week, with Rice replacing Tross and Jorginho acting as the poor man’s Ode, I think Gasperini will deploy a hybrid of the two approaches…a zonal press scheme against Saka, with one man defending the incoming pass, and the other concerned with the backside…then I think he will put a man on Havertz, forcing him to play more with his back to goal, and Jorginho, so that it will be difficult for him to pick a pass…finally he will attempt to defend Rice’s right leg, when on the ball, so as to trap the play on our less utilized left side
that said, I’m not sure how effective this plan will be this early in the year, as these sort of nuanced tweaks are generally more successful later in the season, but if it works and we end up committing more players into the final third, we had better be ready for their counter-attacks…ultimately I think MA will deploy another sideways borefest, which should be enough for us to eke out another victory, as I think Atalanta’s off-season transfer messiness has negatively impacted their form thus far…Cheers
Ambarish—not sure I agree with your “easy draw” take, except to say that it could be worse…I think the one thing that favours us is the fact that we only play each opponent once, which makes things far easier for our one-trick pony of a manager, as opposing managers can’t devote the same attention to details as they would if we faced each opponent twice…now there’s a couple tricky away fixtures, like Inter and Sporting, along with tonight’s affair, but it would be shocking if we didn’t cruise into the next round…if that doesn’t pan out, things could get rather messy come the holiday season…of course, by that time we should be substantially more healthy, fingers-crossed
Line up is out –
__Martinelli__Jesus__Saka__
__Rice__Partey__Havertz__
__Timber__Gabriel__Saliba__White__
__Raya__
TRVL,
Comparatively easier in the sense that we can beat any of those 7 teams on our best days. PSG, Inter are going to be difficult for sure, we are not going to have a 100% win record, but so do others. All we have to do is win enough to be in top 8.
Those 2-legged home and away qualifiers will be sh*t if we don’t.
I think Mikel pussied out a bit here, Ethan should have made the playing XI if he don’t trust Trossard to do the job in the midfield. Havertz and Rice in that midfield provides very less creativity and Saka, Martinelli will have to do their own job.
I hope I am wrong.
probably wise to switch Jorginho with Havertz, even though the latter has been rather dire as a midfielder since he arrived…this will likely enable Jesus to come deeper and Havertz to run in behind at times, which will make it more difficult for Atalanta to double-team Saka…I’m also pleased that Marts is playing so that their wingbacks will have to be more honest when it comes to their positioning
Yep, even an old Jorgi is better than Havertz in that midfield.
The fact that they have Kolasinac in their defence should be enough to motivate our players to score at least 9 today.
Ambarish—there was no way that MA was going to put Ethan in the starting 11 in a CL away fixture…not to mention, if all the rumours are true, regarding Jesus’s camp being pissed at his lack of playing time, it makes some sense that he’s in the starting 11, which meant that Havertz was always going to be shoehorned in somewhere
Atlanta playing the good old man marking game, specially that midfield.
TRVL
Yeah, I was being too optimistic forgetting Mikel likes his own toys.
based on how their Keeper is playing I would make him play the ball as much as humanly possible…he’s got a shocker or two in him tonight
Free kick around the box.. let’s do it
that Ederson yellow could be crucial, as he’s there best man marking midfielder
Ref is the guy that looks like Tross. A good omen.
Brilliant one from Saka, though didn’t go in..
KP—I knew you were going to say that…what match was it when you first mentioned the resemblance?
that’s the kind of tracking we’ll need tonight
Oh, come on…
how Havertz doesn’t have a yellow yet is beyond me…I guess it might be worth it to try and get Ederson his second yellow
you would think we would avoid trying to stop quick free kicks like the plague nowadays
Havertz has got that Chelsea dark art somehow.
Atlanta having a stint at our end, we need more direct attacking.
we’re very fortunate he snatched at that attempt
this sort of more plodding 50/50 affair should favour us, as we should be much harder to breakdown than them
We are missing Odegaard, our dangerous side is blunt today, Saka has hardly got a chance to run in the box.
TRVL
If Jesus camp is not happy with his game time, may be they can suggest him to remain fit and score a bloody goal once in a while.
this is the kind of match that highlights White’s deficiencies going forward, as Saka has been relegated to an afterthought thus far…if Ode is out for an extended period we need to contemplate putting Timber on the right, in his natural position, and Calafiori on the left
Ambarish—I’m not defending his camp, as I would have sold him off this past summer, but I’m sure there are some interesting Brazilian pressure points inside the Emirates, especially with Edu being MA’s underling
A mediocre half from us, hope that changes in the next 45 min.
TRVL,
Probably yes. Jesus wanted the move from City for regular game time but if he a CF and can’t score a goal, there is no point of his street football and beating 3 defenders in closed spaces. We need goal from him.
get used to this sort of uninspiring football if Ode is out for an extended period…this is why we should have targeted a real Striker and an Ode-like player on the left side
this Atalanta side has been leaking goals in Serie A so far yet we can’t seem to create a good chance from open play…the only nibble we had was on Saka’s set piece strike…it speaks to MA’s lack of tactical prowess when it comes to scheming up offensive opportunities…let’s hope there’s a sense of urgency in the 2nd half
The fuck was Partey doing
there would have been no need for Partey to do what he did if White wasn’t so far out of position
Sensational double save by Raya.
glorious double save, albeit horrible first penalty attempt
We need some fucking sense of fucking urgency now.
